Emotions – How To Handle Them

When someone gets visibly upset, most people default to one of two moves.

They pretend nothing happened.

Or they scramble to fix it on the spot.

Both backfire.

There’s a third path: acknowledge it without putting it on display.

Skip “you seem upset.” Too blunt, too exposing.

Try this instead: “It sounds like this matters a lot to you.”

Then give it room. “Should we take five?” might be the most useful sentence you say all day.

A pause isn’t weakness. It’s a release valve.

Later, circle back one on one. “That looked like a tough moment. I’m here if you want to talk it through.”

Emotional intelligence isn’t therapy training.

It’s just knowing how not to make a bad moment worse.
